Obstetrical & Gynecological Ultrasound Q & A

by Melinda M. Martin, M.D.

What is 3-D and 4-D ultrasound technology?

Obstetrical and gynecological ultrasounds are a safe, painless way for Dr. Martin to see images of your developing baby during pregnancy. Using sound waves, 3D ultrasound imaging generates a three-dimensional image of your baby developing in your womb. Dr. Martin uses this advanced technology to track your baby’s growth as well as for detecting any abnormalities so they can be addressed as soon as possible.

The 4-D ultrasound technology takes 3-D images one step further in that you can watch your baby moving in real time, like a live video broadcast.

What can I expect at my 3-D or 4-D ultrasound appointment?

At your 3-D or 4-D ultrasound appointment, Dr. Martin or one of the highly skilled ultrasound technicians put a conducting gel directly on your belly. Using a small, handheld device, she slides the device through the gel around your belly to send high-frequency sound waves into your abdomen. The sound waves send an image to a large-screen color TV so you can see your baby in real-time images and video.

When are obstetrical and gynecological ultrasounds used?

During pregnancy, some of the common reasons you might have an ultrasound are to:

  • Diagnose and confirm early pregnancy
  • Estimate the age of your pregnancy
  • Diagnose congenital abnormalities
  • Determine your baby’s position in the womb
  • Detect twins or multiples
  • Evaluate the amount of amniotic fluid around the baby
  • Assess your baby’s growth and well-being

Dr. Martin also uses gynecological ultrasounds for uterine health. Ultrasounds can show pelvic abnormalities such as ovarian cysts or other uterine complications. Ultrasound imaging provides a clear picture of your gynecological health using a pain-free, safe method without harmful side effects. Unlike X-ray imaging, ultrasound imaging uses no ionizing radiation.

What are the benefits of 3-D and 4-D ultrasound imaging?

A benefit of ultrasounds is that they alert Dr. Martin to any issues or abnormalities that need to be addressed as soon as possible for your baby’s health and proper development. Getting to see your baby in 3-D and in live 4-D video is often an emotional and exciting event.

For many parents, seeing their baby for the first time in the womb is a bonding experience. Additionally, parents have the opportunity to learn the gender of their baby through ultrasound technology.
