Well Woman Exam Q & A

by Melinda M. Martin, M.D.

What can I expect at a well woman exam?

Your visit is an opportunity to speak with Dr. Martin about both your general health and reproductive health concerns. This exam is all about your body, and Dr. Martin and her team of experienced nurses and assistants can answer all of your questions. They are dedicated to providing a comfortable, caring environment for women, by women.

At your well woman exam, you can expect to have a pelvic exam, breast exam, and possibly a Pap test. Much of your exam depends on your age, your concerns, and your overall health and wellness.

What questions come up at a well woman exam?

Dr. Martin asks about your medical history, your family’s medical history, and more specifically about your gynecological health so she can get a clear picture of your overall wellness. Some questions you may want to be prepared to answer include:

  • When was your last period?
  • How often are your periods?
  • How long do your periods last?
  • Do you have any vaginal pain, itching, or discharge?
  • Are you sexually active?
  • Is sex ever painful?
  • Do you use any form of birth control?
  • Do you want to become pregnant?

Dr. Martin or one of her nurses may also ask about alcohol or drug use, if you smoke, any illnesses or infections you’ve had, or anything else that may affect your reproductive health.

What tests do I have at my well woman exam?

The type of tests performed at your well woman exam depends on your age, overall health, and any existing health conditions. Dr. Martin and her team focus on individualized care and treatment for all women, so they determine what tests you may need at any particular time in your life.

If you’re over 21 and sexually active, Dr. Martin may recommend testing for sexually transmitted diseases, Pap tests to check for signs of cervical cancer and breast exams for breast cancer screening. Dr. Martin often recommends mammograms for women over 40 to monitor for breast cancer, as the risk increases with age.

If you’ve never had a well woman exam and you’re over 18, call for an appointment or schedule one online. The best way to treat a condition is to prevent it, and well woman exams can do just that.
